Things I wish I knew
while I was planning to be an entrepreneur.
You will face discouragement.
I think the biggest source of
discouragement is inner lack of confidence.
In India, if a woman has a choice between
being an employee with an attractive salary, job stability and even high social
approval, its hard to forego all that and take a risk with a startup.
Take risks.
Only have enough cash on hand to barely
survive; never so much that you are comfortable. Staying hungry forces you to
push yourself to continue to survive, grow, and evolve.
Be open to advice.
Resist falling in love with your initial
idea so you can discover what the market actually wants and is willing to pay for
and then give it to them! I always suggest that you should sell what people
are already buying in your own voice.
But don't listen to all advice.
You're the average of the five people you
associate with the most, so make sure you surround yourself with people that
support you and your venture.
Don't ever, ever give
up.
Passion changes everything. If you have a
passion project, that's what you should focus on. Just because you've heard a
certain business is a cash cow, doesn't mean you will be successful at it. You
have zero passion, zero experience, and a whole lot of competition. You already
know what you love -find a way for it to make you money.
Seize opportunities
As Richard Branson famously said If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes then learn how to do it later!
